According to Tra Vinh Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD), in 2009 there were 19,600 households involved in farming black tiger shrimp, stocking 1.345 billion of PL in an area of 21,062ha, of which intensive and semi-intensive farming area was 7,000ha, and modified extensive area 12,600ha (rice-shrimp, mangrove forest-shrimp polyculture).
Mr. Pham Nam Duong, Deputy Director of DARD, said thanks to following stocking schedule, experience in selecting PL, and disease prevention, 11,088 shrimp farmers earned profits, accounting for 56.5 percent of total farmers.
Total market-sized shrimp output reached 16,306MT. The average production was 0.774MT per ha. It is noted that 1,758ha of intensive farming yielded 2.4-4.52MT per ha, generating a profit of VND70-200 million per ha; 6,500ha of semi-intensive area yielded 1.2-1.9MT per ha with a profit of VND60-100 million; 12,600ha of modified extensive farming yielded 0.25-0.35MT per ha with a profit of VND15-40 million per ha.
In 2010, Tra Vinh agriculture sector plans to expand farming area up to more than 25,000ha, stocking 2-2.5 billion of black tiger shrimp PL, with an expected output of 19,000MT of market-sized shrimp. (VietFishNews)
