(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In the second week of March 2016, the price of commercial whiteleg shrimp in Tien Giang, Vietnam was on the upward trend, fetching high income for local farmers.
Whiteleg shrimp count 50 pc/kg was priced at VND150,000/kg; VND40,000 - VND50,000/kg higher than that of the same period last year; and white shrimp with size of 30 pc/kg was priced at over VND200,000/kg.
Local farmers prefer farming whiteleg shrimp to black tiger shrimp due to short farming period, stable income and good demand for purchasing white shrimp.
The rise in white shrimp price was attributable to short supply of the species because farmers in many localities hasn’t entered peak farming crop.
According to People’s Committee of Tien Giang province, through March 2016, the aquaculture areas of the province reached 7,900 ha, including more than 4,100 ha of saltwater & brackishwater aquaculture.
With the advantage of more than 30 kilometers of coastline, Tien Giang is promoting coastal aquaculture for exports, in which whiteleg shrimp is the mainstay, accounting for about 70% of total shrimp farming area in the province. With high price, intensive shrimp farmers in Tien Giang are boosting to innovate ponds for the new crop.
