Strong recovery in shrimp exports to EU

(vasep.com.vn) In QIII/2013, Vietnam shrimp exports to EU reached US$125.7 million, up 40.5 percent year-on-year after the decline of 5.2 percent in QI and 1.5 percent in QII.

During the period, exports to leading consumer markets in the block such as Germany, the U.K and France reported sharp increase of 24.8 percent, 65 percent and 71.8 percent, respectively.

Since QII/2013, EU has escaped from prolonged economic crisis, leading to increasing consuming demand for shrimp. High demand and the rise in shrimp price due to supply shortfall boosted shrimp exports from Vietnam to the market.

Frozen raw shrimp was predominant in total shrimp imports into EU. Through June 2013, imports of the item into the market reached US$1.45 billion while imports of processed shrimp reached only US$434 million, according to statistics by International Trade Center (ITC).  Vietnam held the 7th position in supplying frozen raw shrimp to EU after Ecuador, India, Bangladesh, Argentina, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Until June 2013, frozen raw shrimp imports by EU reached US$1.45 billion, down 3.54 percent year-on-year. In which imports from Thailand and China posted a vast drop of 34.5 percent and 24.7 percent, respectively. Dive of 7.3 percent was reported in imports from Vietnam.

However, in July 2013, raw shrimp purchasing by EU rebounded. In July 2013, raw shrimp imports into the market touched US$359.8 million, rising 12.4 percent year-on-year and 32 percent over June 2013. In which imports into 4 leading consumer markets such as Spain, France, Italy and the U.K posted respectable growth of 35.6, 8.2, 27.3 and 11.8 percent, respectively.

Sharp rise in shrimp sales to France

Through September 2013, among EU, France showed the highest growth of 48.5 percent year-on-year in importing shrimp from Vietnam with value of US$40.6 million while imports into Germany, the largest importer of Vietnam shrimp among EU, up 2.7 percent to hit US$61.7 million.

Until July 2013, France’s shrimp imports from Vietnam surged 40 percent while imports from Thailand and India went down 33.4 and 4.3 percent, respectively. Despite occupying 3.5 percent in value and 3 percent in volume out of France’s total shrimp imports, Vietnam black tiger shrimps were favored by French consumers.
