(vasep.com.vn) During the past years, Soc Trang province in the Mekong Delta has placed emphasis on developing local fishery sector and gained achievements in aquaculture, fish catching, seafood exports.
Aquaculture of the province develops well in districts such as Vinh Chau, Tran De, My Xuyen, Long Phu, etc.
Along with effective rice-shrimp farming model in My Xuyen, Tran De districts, other shrimp cultivations are being developed in the province including the improved extensive shrimp farming model; intensive and semi-intensive shrimp farming model with the total area of 22,300 hectares in 2012.
Whiteleg shrimp has been permitted to be raised in the southeast provinces and the Mekong Delta since 2008, farmers in Soc Trang province has boosted raising this species. In 2012, the whiteleg shrimp farming area reached 3,606 hectares, increasing 33-fold from that of 2009 with average productivity of 10.5 MT per hectare.
Currently, the price of black tiger shrimp and whiteleg shrimp in the Mekong Delta are high. If the situation remains, Soc Trang province will exceed yearly plan on shrimp farming in 2013.
