Soc Trang: Bumper crop of shrimp

(vasep.com.vn) In 2013 crop, brackishwater shrimp farmers in Soc Trang province enjoyed a bumper crop. High shrimp price is also a good news for farmers.

Until 15th October 2013, farming area of Soc Trang was 46,500 hectares, surpassing 3.4 percent of yearly plan and increasing 7.3 percent from the same period of 2012.

Out of which, farming area of whiteleg shrimp reached 16,000 hectares, up 2.3 times of yearly plan with average productivity of 4.5 MT per hectare.

Meanwhile, local farmers harvested 22,000 hectares of black tiger shrimp. The productivity of the shrimp farmed under improved extensive model reached 0.5 MT per hectare, under intensive farming model hit 3.1 MT per hectare and under semi-intensive farming model hit 1.6 MT per hectare.

During this time, shrimp production of the locality totaled 57,000 MT. If everything is on schedule, shrimp production of the province in 2013 is estimated to hit 68,500 MT, up 22 percent of yearly plan.
