Shrimp makes great contribution to fishery success

Shrimp makes great contribution to fishery success

In the firsts months, in the Mekong Delta shrimp production increased and export prices saw higher level. White shrimp, notably, had double digit growth rates in many markets, and even achieved three-digit growth rate in the U.S. and South Korea. Compared to 2013, whiteleg shrimp production has increased 4 times. Black tiger prawn remained to be the dominant export commodity of the shrimp sector.  Vietnam is now the world biggest black tiger shrimp producer with stable annual output. This is the basis for sustainable growth in the value of shrimp export.

A report from the Vietnam General Directorate of Fisheries showed that shrimp prices continued to be higher than many countries. Vietnam seafood dominated the world market thanks to stable supplies, good quality and reasonable prices whilst shrimp production in other countries such as Thailand and China have not yet recovered. Indian shrimp products have decreased prices because of limitations in processing technologies. This is an opportunity for Vietnam shrimp process industry to increase significantly in the near future.

Up to now, most brackish- water shrimps in 30 provinces have been harvested. The results showed a production increase over the same period. This will be a good opportunity for Vietnam shrimp to remain position in world market and make export value of major commodities surpass the targets.
