Quang Nam: Developing white leg shrimp farming

Since 2005 shrimp farmers in Quang

Over the last two years, white leg shrimp farming has been significantly developed and proved efficient in Quang Nam province. Since 2005, shrimp farmers in Quang Nam province embarked on farming white leg shrimp along with traditional black tiger shrimp. As a result, shrimp farming area, yield and production of farmed shrimp all increased significantly.

In 2006, the farming area of white leg shrimp in Quang Nam province was around 100ha, and now the figure increased to 1,350ha, accounting for 70 percent of the province’s total shrimp farming area, concentrating in districts of Thang Binh, Nui Thanh, and Tam Ky city.

White leg shrimp is farmed in tidal area by Truong Giang river banks, with average yield of 4.5MT per ha. This species is also farmed in coastal sandy land with average yield of 12MT per ha. Mr. Tran Van Tuong, Director of Quang Nam Center for Agriculture and Fisheries Extension, said to boost white leg shrimp farming at the locality, it is necessary to strictly control shrimp hatcheries to assure quality of shrimp juveniles; enhance quarantine of shrimp juveniles imported from other provinces; and pay attention to widen consumption markets. (VietfishNews)
