The good success of black tiger shrimp and mono-sex tilapia farming in the province of Ninh Binh in 2009 opened a new opportunity for further development of aquaculture, and create jobs and stable income for thousands of households in three communes of Kim Hai, Kim Trung and Kim Dong in Kim Son district.
Last year, 360 households in Kim Son farmed black tiger shrimp and mono-sex tilapia in an area of more than 200ha of ponds, and had rather good crop. They harvested more than 1,000MT of black tiger shrimp and hundreds MT of tilapia, gaining more than VND50 million per ha thanks to the application of new farming model.
In 2010, Ninh Binh plans to expand the farming area of black tiger shrimp and mono-sex tilapia up to 500-700ha, and introduce some new high-valued species such as whiteleg shrimp, barramundi, and cobia to increase earnings from aquaculture practice.
