(vasep.com.vn) Currently, Ngoc Tri Seafood Company’s processing plant has just fulfilled 70 – 80 percent of its designed production capacity. This is due to lack of workers and raw material. Despite favorable working policy, it is hard for the company to find enough workers to ensure its full operations.
Lack of supply pushed prices of black tiger and whiteleg shrimp up 7 – 10 percent against a year ago. Black tiger shrimp are mostly produced under an extensive farming model. The price of this species continues to rise, when farmers are turning their production to whiteleg shrimp.
Currently, the global shrimp market has still been on quiet trend; therefore, Ngoc Tri Seafood just set its target to keep exports to the four key markets including South Korea, Japan, Middle East and the EU in 2013. Korean imports of shrimp from Vietnam fell down since the beginning of the year due to weakened KRW. However, this market started to increase purchase in May.
Japan and the EU slightly reduced imports from Vietnam when the shrimp price went higher and turned to buy products from Indian and Bangladeshi suppliers. The weakened rupee and high shrimp production are helping Indian companies strengthen exports of whiteleg shrimp. At the same time, many buyers from Japan are asking for Bangladeshi shrimp products, though it imported a very low volume of shrimp from this country.
Despite difficulties in some importing countries, Ngoc Tri Seafood’s shrimp exports still reached US$13 million, equal to those of the corresponding time of 2012
