Mekong Delta: Rice-shrimp farming development

Currently, the area for shrimp farming in rotation with rice growing in the Mekong Delta reaches around 130,000ha, of which rice-black tiger shrimp farming area occupies 120,000ha, concentrating in provinces of Ca Mau, Kien Giang, Bac Lieu and Soc Trang, rice-scampi farming area stays at 8,000ha, mainly in provinces of Dong Thap, An Giang, Tien Giang, Hau Giang, Can Tho, Tra Vinh and Ben Tre.

Shrimp-rice farming model, a sustainable and high economic efficiency production model aiming to produce safe products and protect the environment, has been applied by farmers in the Mekong Delta for many years. In recent years, this model has been developed remarkably due to new techniques application. It is reported that many farmers earn a profit of more than VND50 million per ha, some even get VND100 million per ha from rice-shrimp farming model.

To effectively develop this model, it is necessary to draw up the detailed planning, an infrastructure investment strategy, especially improving irrigation system, reinforcing aquaculture breeding monitoring, and applying technical measures matching with particular conditions of the region.
