Khanh Hoa increases whiteleg shrimp farming in 2014

(vasep.com.vn) In 2013, Khanh Hoa province, a large shrimp farming area of Vietnam, stocked 1,800 hectares of whiteleg shrimp with harvest production of 29,500 MT, 95 percent of which was processed to export. Shrimp exports by the province became a main impetus to raise the locality's seafood export turnover.

Thong Thuan Co., LTD is one of leading shrimp exporters in Khanh Hoa province. In 2013, the company exported over 250 MT of shrimp products, worth by US$26 million, mainly to Germany, Japan, the U.K, Denmark and European countries. The company is shifting to process whiteleg shrimp products to meet higher demand for exporting.

In Khanh Hoa province, the whiteleg shrimp farming area in 2014 is forecasted to increase by 2 percent. Accordingly, the local production of the species will rise 1.5 percent year-on-year. Local authorities will direct whiteleg shrimp farmers to ensure traceability in farming process to meet EU's requirements.

Vietnam exported its shrimp to 92 markets with export turnover of US$3.1 billion in 2013, representing a year-on-year increase of 39.1 percent and making up nearly 50 percent of the country's total seafood exports.

It is expected that Vietnam shrimp exports in 2014 to main markets will perform well. Whiteleg shrimp is hoped to be in high demand in the year and farmers will continue to expand farming area of the species.
