Khanh Hoa home to 16 vannamei prawn hatcheries

These hatcheries import shrimp broodstock from Hawaii and produce juveniles locally in supply for the aquaculture.

In the first nine months this year, the shrimp produced more than 1.8 billion of juveniles, a two-fold increase year-on-year.

Although black tiger prawn is a key farmed species, demand for vannamei is higher. As a result, more vannamei hatcheries are beeing built. The hachery owners are advised to strictly comply with existing regulations on vannamei broodstock imports and post-larvae production because vannamei is an exotic species, which is highly vulnerable to disease.

Khanh Hoa province has zoned the vannamei farming area in Nha Trang and Cam Ranh cities as well as Ninh Hoa and Van Ninh districts.

The shrimp hatcheries in the province supplied 2 billion seeds to the market last year. This year, the amount is expected to be higher to meet the farming area expansion.
