India seafood exports up 22%

(IntraFish) Seafood exports rose 22 percent in India during April through December of 2011. The country exported 621,577 metric tons valued at INR121.9 billion ($2.48 billion / €1.87 billion), far surpassing the 612,505 metric tons valued at INR100.18 billion ($2.03 billion/ €1.5 billion) exported in the same period of 2010, reports The Economic Times.

Frozen shrimp and fish were the largest exported items. Frozen shrimp continued to be the major export item accounting for 51.35 percent of the total earnings. Shrimp exports rose by 35 percent in value, with vannamei shrimp export showing an increase of 326 percent.
