Honduran shrimp farmers wary of EMS spread

Producers nervous over Mexico's silence, and rumors the disease may have spread to Guatemala.

The Honduran shrimp sector is aiming for $200 million (€149.8 million) in shrimp exports, but is cautiously eyeing the growing concerns over the early mortality syndrome (EMS) outbreak in Mexico, according to Honduran newspaper La Tribuna.

Mexican authorities continue to be silent on whether or not EMS is indeed the cause of mortalities in its ponds, and unconfirmed reports that the disease may have spread to Guatemala are adding to the confusion in the sector, latribuna.hn reported.

The specter of the disease comes amid positive signs for the sector: the new quotas allocated under a new agreement with the European Union and increased demand from a market shortfall.
