Ha Tinh: High yield in high-tech vannamei farming on sand

(vasep.com.vn) Under semi-intensive farming model, whiteleg shrimp reared in Ha Tinh province fetches high productivity and profit thanks to its good adaptation and fast growth.

However, local farmers only reared the species for one or two crops of a year. They can not breed vannamei in the winter season due to rain, floods and cold weather, affecting to shrimp's growth.

The project "Vannamei farming on sand in winter season in Ha Tinh" was implemented under the program "Transferring technologies for social-economic development in rural and mountainous regions in 2011- 2015" hosted by Bao Son Co, Ltd.

In two year implementation of the project, Research Institute for Aquaculture No. 3 (RIA 3) provided  technical guidances on vannamei farming in sand-based canvas ponds and to guide famers to renovate farming ponds, select and stock shrimp seed, feed and control shrimp in farming process, prevent diseases and harvest shrimp.

Under the model, farmer can harvest 15 MT per hectare, surpassing the target of 12 MT per hectare, earn VND1.2 billion per hectare.

So far, the province has expanded nearly 450 hectares of vannamei farming area and earned VND3-4 billion per hectare per year.

With 137 kilometer coastal area and 6/12 coastal districts and cities; 7,261 hectares of the province can be used for aquaculture, especially sand-based shrimp farming with high productivity.
