First VietGAP certificate for farmed shrimp in Ba Ria Vung Tau

(vasep.com.vn) Nguyen Dang Nhan, a farmer in Xuyen Moc district (Ba Ria - Vung Tau province) was recently granted the VietGAP certificate for his farmed whiteleg shrimp products by local Sub-department of Aquaculture and the Globalcert – a certifier of VietGAP program. The certified shrimp was grown in ponds of total area of 5.71 hectares, providing an estimated production of 16 MT per year. The certificate will be validated until November 2015.

This is the first certificate for aquaculture products granted by VietGAP certification program. Mr. Nhan has been applying a new method of breeding whiteleg shrimp seeds in nursery ponds. Shrimp seeds were stocked in ponds of 1.000 – 2.000 square meters for each with densities of 1,000 – 1,800 pieces per meter. After 15 – 20 days of stocking, shrimp seeds were released into grow-out ponds.

All these nursery and grow-out ponds’ bottoms were covered by canvas. There were also nets covering above and around the ponds to protect shrimp from insects or animals, as well as to keep appropriate temperature for shrimp growing. Workers were also restricted from entering into the nursery area in order to prevent risks of diseases from outside or those spreading among ponds. This method resulted in an effective management and good production of the new method.
