After the project of pilot whiteleg shrimp (penaeus vannamei) farming in Ham Rong commune, Nam Can district was successful, Ca Mau southern province plans to expand this species farming area to 6,000 hectares by 2010. The province expects its production to reach 8-10 MT per hectare. This will be another raw material source for developing seafood processing industry in the province.
Local authorities said that they would strengthen control on farming activities of this species to avoid unplanned cultivation. Whiteleg shrimp farming places is isolated from current black tiger areas to prevent disease spreading.
