Deputy Chairman of Ca Mau’s People Committee, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Hong said the province has built the project “Improvement of rice-shrimp farming production, quality, and efficiency to 2015”,including an investment of VND4,000 billion in planning of 23 irrigation systems serving rice-shrimp farming. Currently, the total rice-shrimp farming area in eight provinces of the Mekong Delta (Long An, Tien Giang, Ben Tre, Tra Vinh, Soc Trang, Bac Lieu, Ca Mau, and Kien Giang) reached around 120,000ha.
Mr. Tran Thanh Be, Director of the Mekong Delta Development Research Institute, Can Tho University, said “in many aspects, rice-shrimp farming is more sustainable than other types of specializing model. However, it is necessary to apply comprehensive management solutions, use fewer chemicals, and apply Good Aquaculture Practice (GAP) in this model”. (VietFishNews)
