Ca Mau developing fishery sustainably

(vasep.com.vn) Fisheries industry, including aquaculture sector, particularly shrimp farming plays an important part in remaining Ca Mau province's economic growth. The province has over 296,000 hectares of aquaculture land including 266,000 hectares of shrimp farming. Annually, the local aquaculture production obtains 280,000 MT including 130,000 MT of shrimp.

Shrimp sales by the locality in 2013 reached over US$1 billion. Thus, local authorities direct stakeholders to focus on developing aquaculture sector of the province.

To develop Ca Mau's aquaculture sector sustainably, local stakeholders are called to join hands in expanding the certification for organic shrimp under forest-shrimp farming (17,000 hectares) and under rice-shrimp farming (43,000 hectares).

Being a speciality of the province, crabs are reared under intensive model with high productivity. The species are mainly co-cultivated with shrimp under extensive model on large area. The annual crab production is estimated to achieve over 20,000 MT, fetching high profit to local farmers. The province plans to expand farming area of the species in coming time.

In 2014, the province targets to reap 298,500 MT of farmed fish on the farming area of 296,000 hectares. Shrimp production in the year is hoped to reach 140,000 MT.
