Ben Tre: Effective management for shrimp farming
(vasep.com.vn) In 2014, aquaculture farms covers the area of 47,202 hectares. In particular, marine shrimp farming area was 35,953 hectares, including 10,694 hectares of intensive and semi-intensive shrimp farms. In these 10,694 hectares, 86% was for whiteleg shrimp, and the other is for black tiger shrimp. Other shrimp farming methods were applied in 25,259 hectares.
Total aquaculture production was estimated at 245,300 MT up 2.8% year on year. Particularly, shrimp production reached 54,300 MT, up 3.8% compared to the same period in 2013.
To achieve these results, multiple measures were implemented to restrict diseases and improve production efficiency. The province also invested in infrastructure and enhanced bio-product management.
Seafood industry was restructured. Various standards, namely VietGAP and GlobalGAP have been applied in shrimp farming to promote both quality and sustainability. In Ben Tre, there is 1 GlobalGAP certified farm, 1 ASC certified farm and 1 applying high tech in farming.
In 2015, total aquaculture area in the province is expected be 46.8 thousand hectares with 10 thousand hectares for intensive and semi-intensive shrimp farming, 80% of which is for vannamei. Total aquaculture production is forecasted to be 251.5 thousand MT with 56 thousand MT of marine shrimp.
