Bac Lieu to become the largest industrial shrimp farming area of Vietnam

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Bac Lieu province is considered to be the second largest locality in Vietnam country in terms of farming area and output of shrimp. Particularly, in recent years, the province has developed a model of high-tech shrimp farming to become the centre of industrial shrimp farming in the country.

Currently, the total area of brackish water shrimp farming in the province was nearly 131,500 ha, with the output of more than 110,300 MT. At the same time, Bac Lieu province led the country in the area of industrial shrimp farming. Of that, the area for intensive and semi-intensive shrimp farming hit over 19,900 ha, with the output of over 58,000 MT.

In addition, the farming area for improved-extensive shrimp reached over 500 ha, with the output of 175 MT; that for rice-shrimp touched more than 31,000 ha, with the output of more than 8,000 MT; that for innovated extensive shrimp was nearly 80,000 ha, with the output of 32,000 MT.

The province has three enterprises which were granted certificates of agricultural enterprises applying high technology. The whole province has about 100 ha of super-intensive shrimp farming, with the stocking density of 250-300 pieces/m2, and the productivity of 80-150 MT/ha/year. The locality also has 5 companies have achieving the international standard certification in aquaculture with a total area of 496 ha.

In addition, Bac Lieu is the leading province in the country to produce shrimp seed. Currently, the province had 188 shrimp seed production facilities, 40 crab seed production facilities and 108 shrimp seed nurseries; the capacity hit more than 35 billion posts per year.

Accordingly, fisheries output in Bac Lieu province expected to hit 370,000 MT with the processing capacity of 78,000 MT by 2020.
