Bac Lieu started new shrimp crop on 30,620 hectares
(vasep.com.vn) In February 2014, farmers in Bac Lieu province stocked shrimp for new crop on the area of over 30,620 hectares in which industrial and semi-industrial black tiger shrimp farming made up over 1,030 hectares and the remaining area was used to farm whiteleg shrimp and black tiger shrimp under extensive and innovated extensive models.
To reduce loss and prevent diseases on shrimp, local authorities quarantined over 558 million post-larvae shrimp produced by the locality or bought from other provinces. Besides, they strengthened guiding and training farmers with raising techniques.
So far, in the province, there has been 163 farmers purchasing insurance for the total of shrimp farming area of 183 hectares with total insurance cost of VND9.44 billion (in which VND5.69 billion comes from the state budget).
Until now, the insurance company has compensated VND874 million for 107 hectares of dead shrimp.
Buying farming insurance helps farmers reduce losses caused by diseases and save capital to maintain cultivation.
