Bac Lieu: Shrimp farmers to slow down breeding

(vasep.com.vn) Bac Lieu Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has been actively cooperating with provincial Verification and Testing Centers and Institutes for Aquaculture to find the cause of shrimp mortality. The results will be released in the upcoming time.

To limit disease infection, the agricultural sector recommended farmers to delay stocking time and should stock with low density: 15 pieces per square meter for black tiger shrimp and 50 pieces per square meter for whiteleg shrimp. The agricultural sector requested that farmers should build sedimentation pond and waste water treatment pond before discharging water into the environment, ensure shrimp seed before breeding and avoid using banned and untraceable chemicals in farming.

According to the report of Research Institute for Aquaculture No.2 (RIA 2), so far, disease on farmed shrimp has been happening and hurting many Mekong Delta provinces such as Tra Vinh, Ben Tre, Kien Giang, Bac Lieu, Soc Trang in which intensive and semi-intensive shrimp farming area in Tra Vinh and Kien Giang were hit the most.

This year to date, in Tra Vinh province, total losses caused by dead shrimp were estimated at VND800 – 900 billion. Due to shrimp mortality, shrimp production of the province was slashed by 15,000 MT, worth by VND2,300 billion.
