China - The third largest importer of Vietnam seafood

(vasep.com.vn) For the year 2012 to QII/2013, China surpassed South Korea holding the third position among importing countries of Vietnam seafood. With the revenue of US$231 million in first 6 months of 2013, China made up nearly 28 percent of total seafood exports of Vietnam.

In QI/2013, Vietnam seafood exports to China valued at US$98 million, up 8% over the same period of 2012 and continued positive growth in QII/2013. The market imported mainly shrimp and pangasius from Vietnam.

In spite of suffering from economic headwind, China’s seafood demand remained at high level because it is the most populous country in the world. In 2012, the country’s seafood imports still reached US$5.5 billion, down less than 2 percent from the previous year.

Due to lack of raw material, China boosted importing raw shrimp and finfish. This trend will continue in 2013. Moreover, in 2013, seafood consumption in China will be boosted by fears over poultry as bird flu continues to claim local lives. This is a good chance for Vietnam seafood exporters to ship their products to the market.
