Japan- a potential surimi market

(vasep.com.vn) Accounted for 12.4% of Vietnam's total surimi exports, Japan is the third largest exporting market, after South Korea and ASEAN.

Vietnamese companies earned US$ 13.9 million surimi export to Japan in the first five months, up 11.5% year-on-year.

Data from International Trade Center ITC, through May, Japan imported surimi from 43 countries. Vietnam, occupying 7% of the market share, was in the top 5 exporting markets, after Thailand, India, Norway and China.

Surimi was originated from Japan. This country was where the first surimi processor was founded. Currently, Japan is still the largest surimi consumption market. In Japan's market, pollock surimi is higher priced than tropical surimi. The exchange rate of yen against the dollar fluctuates, pollock surimi will rise in price. Therefore, it is likely that Japanese will switch to tropical surimi.

The youth of Japan have changed taste. The consumption of value-added products increases. Therefore, it is needed to add more values to products and focus on advertising.
