(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In QII/2016, Vietnam crab exports posted a slight drop. However, total exports in the first half of 2016 valued nearly US$49.8 million, up 3.1% over the same period last year.
Top 10 main importing markets, accounting for more than 94% of the total crab exports of Vietnam, included the U.S, the EU, Japan, China, ASEAN, Australia, Taiwan and Canada. Vietnam crab exports to almost major markets registered a year-on-year increase. Notably, crab exports to China and Canada rose sharply over the same period last year, with the 3 digit growth rate.
The U.S.
In Jan-Jun 2016, Vietnam crab exports to the U.S. hit nearly US$18.5 million, down 17.6% from the same period in 2015.
Vietnam held the 6th rank in top crab suppliers to this market in the first 5 months of this year. Crabs from Vietnam have to compete with those from Indonesia and the Philippines.
Japan
In Apr-Jun 2016, Vietnam crab exports to Japan showed the downward trend. However, with the good growth in early this year, total crab sales in Jan-Jun 2016 reached more than US$9.3 million, up 12% year on year and Japan had outstripped the EU to claim as the 2nd largest crab importer from Vietnam.
Out of 27 countries to export crabs to the market, Vietnam ranked the 8th behind Indonesia. The proportion of Indonesia’s crab exports to Japan doubled that of Vietnam.
The EU
Vietnam crab exports to the EU in the first 6 months of 2016 touched nearly US$9 million, up 2.6% compared to the same period last year.
France, the UK, the Netherlands and Belgium were main crab importers from Vietnam in the bloc. Of which, exports to France and the Netherlands represented a rise, while those to the UK and Belgium showed a fall on par with the same period last year. Vietnam was the leading crab supplier to the EU.
In the next time, stable seafood consumption from the markets will help to facilitate Vietnam crab exports.
