(vasep.com.vn) In September 2014, cephalopod exports to the US rocketed with 307.7% growth from the same period last year. July 2014 saw a more astonishing increase of Vietnam’s cephalopod exports to the US with 1,210.9% year on year growth. This is a good sign from 2 gloomy years.
Cumulative value for cephalopod exports from Vietnam to the US for 9 months of 2014 reached US$ 2.5 million, up 30.3% year on year. The US currently is the 7th biggest cephalopod consumption market for Vietnam.
In QI/2014, Chinese companies dominated the US cephalopod market. Nevertheless, since April 2014, as Russian market was on downturn, Vietnamese companies showed more interest in the US market making exports to the US considerably grew by 70% comparing to the same period in 2013.
Though not accounting much in total Vietnam cephalopod exports, the US is a potential market.
In 8 initial months of 2014, Vietnam was ranked 15th in the top list of cephalopod to the US. Import prices from Vietnam were equivalent to Thailand and Spain. China, accounted for 45% to 50% of total cephalopod imported into the US, continued to dominate the US cephalopod market with competitive prices.
Demand for cephalopod in the US in Q4/2014 is forecasted to be up 20-70% year on year, especially frozen, dried, salted squid and octopus (HS 030749-59). However, export price may not increase.
