The Netherlands increased import of frozen squid

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) The Netherlands is the third largest importer for Vietnamese cephalopod, accounting for 9% of Vietnamese cephalopod exports to the EU and 1.1% of Vietnamese cephalopod total exports to all markets. In the first 7 months of 2019, Vietnamese cephalopod exports to the Netherlands reached US $ 3.7 million, up 26.8% over the same period in 2018. Particularly in July 2019, the export of this item to the Netherlands reached US $ 0.9 million, up 12.2% compared to July 2018.

In the first 7 months of 2019, export of cephalopod to the Netherlands fell in February and June, exports in the other months grew positively. The yellow card warning of the EU was one of the causes affecting Vietnamese cephalopod exports to the Netherlands.

Vietnamese cephalopod exports to the Netherlands shall be more favorable thanks to tax incentives when the Vietnam-EU Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) take effect. As committed in EVFTA, some squid and octopus products with high basic tax rates (20%) shall be reduced immediately to 0% ... Most frozen squid and octopus products currently that have a basic tax of 6-8% shall be reduced immediately to 0%. However, businesses must meet the requirements of origin to be able to enjoy these tariff preferences.

According to ITC statistics, from 2014-2018, imports of cephalopod into the Netherlands fell from US$ 23.5 million to US$ 8.3 million. Cephalopod imports into the Netherlands is declining due to low supply and high price. In 2018, Spain, China, Peru, France and Vietnam were the main suppliers of cephalopod for the Netherlands. Vietnam ranked fourth, accounting for 12% of the total import value of cephalopod into the Netherlands.

According to ITC statistics, frozen/processed squid and cuttle fish were the two main imported products of the Netherlands. In the first 4 months of this year, the Netherlands increased imports of frozen cuttlefish and squid. China, Spain and Germany were the main suppliers of frozen cuttlefish and squid to the Netherlands.
