Vietnam has been taking various measures across its provinces in order to fight IUU fishing so that it can have the yellow card that it still holds from the EU removed.
Recently, in the Binh Dinh province, authorities set up two teams at the Quy Nhon and De Gi fishing ports to inspect vessels leaving the harbors, docking, and handling of fishing violations. The fisheries department in the province also set up a hotline to receive comments related to this issue, reported VTV.
The country is also aiming to streamline processes between provinces in order to better combat illegal fishing. Thus, the People's Committees of the coastal provinces Ben Tre, Binh Thuan, Tien Giang, Tra Vinh, Soc Trang, Bac Lieu, Kien Giang, and Ca Mau have recently signed a regulation to better manage, inspect, and control fishing vessels and their crew, according to NNVN news.
Vietnamese authorities also recently announced that the country has 18,592 fishing vessels that have monitoring equipment – nearly 70 percent of its total fishing fleet for this sector. The Da Nang province has implemented many policies to support fishermen such as aiding in buying hull insurance - the ship will only contribute 10 percent and the remaining will come from the government. This region will financially support vessels for monitoring equipment while another locality, Binh Dinh has the highest rate of vessels with such devices – a total of 3,066 out of 3,156 boats.
