April 26, 2013, 08:37 AM
(vasep.com.vn) Through Mach 2013, Vietnam’s bivalve mollusk export value posted a growth of 7.1 percent from the corresponding period of 2012. In Mar 2013, exports to some main markets (Japan, Australia and Canada) saw a surprising advance over that of Mar 2012.

In the first 3 months of 2013, clam exports to two large markets (EU and Japan) reported positive growth of 8.9 percent and 48.5 percent from a year ago. Among EU block, clam shipments to Spain, Portugal and Italy surged 16.7 percent, 3.2 percent and 60.3 percent, respectively compared to the same period of 2012.

In Jan-Mar 2013, bivalve mollusk exports to Japan, the U.S., Australia and Canada increased owing to high demand. However, in Japanese market, Vietnam clam is suffering from a fierce competition in price with Chinese seafood exporters.

In the second quarter of 2013, demand for clam, scallop, mussel in large markets is expected to increase tremendously, within these products clam exports to EU will be more stable. As a result, bivalve mollusk export value will rose by 5-10 percent against the same period of the previous year.
