Rebound in Vietnam cephalopod exports to ASEAN
November 01, 2017, 08:32 AM
(seafood.vasep.com.vn) After the decline in imports in early this year, ASEAN has continuously increased imports of cephalopod from Vietnam in the last 6 months. According to the statistics from Vietnam Customs, Vietnam’s cephalopod exports to ASEAN in the first 7 months of this year totaled US$38 million, an increase of 40% over the same period in 2016. This was the 4th largest importer of Vietnam cephalopod.

ASEAN countries currently increased imports of squid from Vietnam. The export value of Vietnam squid to this market accounted for 96.9% of Vietnam’s cephalopod exports to ASEAN. In Jan-Jul 2017, shipments of Vietnam’s squid products all increased, except for other processed items. Of that, sales of live/fresh/frozen squid posted the 3-digit growth.

Currently, Thailand and Malaysia are the two major importers of Vietnam cephalopod in the region. In particular, shipments to Thailand picked up the proportion of 77% of Vietnam’s total cephalopod exports to ASEAN and exports to the market are on the upward trend. In the first 7 months of this year, Vietnam’s cephalopod sales to Thailand amounted to US$29 million, up 34% from a year before.

In addition, according to ITC statistics, Thailand was also the biggest buyer of cephalopod in ASEAN. In the first half of this year, cephalopod imports into the country accounted for 45% of total imports into ASEAN, with the value of US$37 million, but down over 74% over the same period last year. Vietnam and China are the two leading suppliers to Thailand. While Thailand increased imports from Vietnam, the market remarkably reduced those of this item from China.

Imports of frozen squid (HS code 030749) took up the highest value into ASEAN; followed by live/fresh/chilled squid (HS code 030741); frozen octopus (HS code 030759), processed squid (HS code 160554); processed octopus (HS code 160555) and live/fresh/chilled octopus (HS code 030751). Imports of frozen squid occupied the highest proportion of 81.3% of the total import value of cephalopod into ASEAN while those of the remaining items accounted for 10%.
