QI: Vietnam’s cephalopod exports to EU rose 79.8%

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In the first quarter of 2017, Vietnam’s cephalopod exports to the EU reached US$20.04 million, up 79.8% over the same period in 2016. Italy was the leading importer in the bloc with the value of US$11.8 million, up 72.5%; followed by France with US$2.1 million, up 339.3% and the Netherlands with US$1.2 million, up 234% year on year. The EU ranked the 3rd in top largest buyers of Vietnam cephalopod, picking up 19%, up from 14% in QI/2016.

The EU currently accounts for 43% of the total world imports of cephalopod. In 2016, cephalopod imports into the EU reached a peak of 521,278 MT among the last 5-7 years and up from 490,928 MT in 2015. Of that, Spain is the leading importer of cephalopod in the bloc with the volume in 2016 of 195,175 MT, followed by Italy with 165,793 MT and Portugal with 42,540 MT.

The average import price of cephalopod into the EU in 2016 quoted at US$5,391 per ton. This was also the highest price in the last 5 years.

Morocco was the leading supplier of cephalopod to the EU in 2016, with the value of US$612.2 million, up from US$493.7 million in 2015, followed by Spain with US$517.3 million, up from US$451.6 million in 2015 and India with US$199.5 million, up from US$148.5 million in 2015. Vietnam ranked the 16th in top largest cephalopod suppliers to the EU in 2016 with the value of US$47.9 million.
