Bright future for Vietnam shrimp in US market
October 01, 2013, 05:28 PM
(vasep.com.vn) On 20th of September 2013, the United States International Trade Commission (USITC) determined that a U.S. industry is not materially injured by reason of imports of frozen warmwatershrimp from Vietnam and other four countries including India, Ecuador, Malaysia and China.

As a result, the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC) will not issue countervailing duty (CVD) orders on imports of these products from these countries. Vietnam shrimp exporters will receive a refund on the duty they had already paid.

The lawsuit on CVD can be regarded as a “miracle”. “This is a special thing that a shrimp ,which is produced in a country being considered as a non-market economy by the U.S, is not subjected to the duty’”, Truong Dinh Hoe, General Secretary of VASEP said.

This is the next positive result for Vietnam shrimp exporters after the DOC recognized that sales by 33 Vietnam shrimp exporters to the U.S. market have not been made below normal value. Without the anti-dumping duty and CVD, Vietnam shrimp enterprises hope to find more opportunities to export their products to the U.S., Mr Hoe affirmed.

Despite difficulties, shrimp exports by Vietnam remain its competitiveness in the world market, increasing 22 percent in the first eight months of 2013 and reaching over US$1.7 billion in turnover. Without the anti-dumping duty and CVD, Vietnam shrimp exporters expect a bright future in the U.S. market, Tran Van Linh, General Director of  Thuan Phuoc Seafoods and Trading Corporation said.

This is an extremely good opportunity for Vietnam shrimp exporters as other major suppliers such as Thailand and China are suffering from severe losses due to shrimp disease, Pham Hoang Viet, Deputy General Director of Sao Ta Foods Joint Stock Company (Fimex VN) told.

This is not only good news with Vietnam shrimp exporters but also U.S. importers. They will buy Vietnam shrimp thanks to its good supply and competitive price.
