March 20, 2018, 08:46 AM
(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In 2017, the export value of Vietnam tuna to Mexico increased by 61% over the previous year. In particular, exports to this market in many months increased sharply from 133 to 430% compared with 2016. In 2018, Mexico expected to continue being a potential importer of many Vietnamese tuna enterprises.

In September and November 2017, Vietnam’s tuna exports to Mexico decreased by 26.6% and 16.7% over the same period last year. In the remaining months, the export value to this market recorded the positive growth.

According to the ITC's latest statistics, based on data from Mexico's National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), in 2017, Mexico's tuna imports from South Korea, Venezuela, Singapore and Spain decreased while those from Vietnam increased rapidly.

By the end of August 2017, China, the U.S and Vietnam were the three largest tuna suppliers to Mexico.

In 2017, the top six tuna products imported into the Mexican market included canned and processed tuna (HS code 160414); frozen skipjack (HS code 030343); frozen yellowfin tuna (HS code 030342); frozen tuna fillets (HS code 030487); frozen bigeye tuna (HS code 030344) and frozen tuna (HS code 030349). Of that, imports of canned and processed tuna (HS code 160414) accounted for the largest share of 39-70% of the import value.

Recently, Vietnam boosted exports of tuna frozen products to the market; while China and Indonesia focused on canned and processed items (HS code 161404).
